1. Clinical Clearance & Discharge Planning
The discharge process begins when your attending consultant doctor completes their clinical evaluation during morning rounds and determines that you are medically stable to continue recovery at home. The doctor writes the discharge order in your case file and initiates the preparation of your detailed discharge summary.
2. The Discharge Workflow: Step-by-Step
The comprehensive discharge process involves several coordinated steps to ensure patient safety:
- Clinical Summary Preparation: The medical team drafts a complete Discharge Summary documenting your admission diagnosis, clinical course, surgical/medical procedures performed, lab investigations, and final treatment outcome.
- Medication Charting: The physician prescribes home medications, exact dosages, duration, and dietary or activity restrictions.
- Pharmacy & Service Reconciliation: The floor nurse finalizes the return of any unused hospital medications and reconciles all diagnostic and ward charges with the billing department.
- Billing Settlement: The final invoice is generated. For cash/self-paying patients, the remaining balance is settled at the billing counter. For insurance/TPA patients, the final approval is obtained from the insurance provider.
- Nurse Briefing & Handover: The nursing staff hands over your discharge summary, original diagnostic reports, imaging films, and explains the medication schedule.
3. Estimated Processing Time
While our teams work diligently to expedite discharges, please anticipate a standard processing window of approximately 2 to 3 hours from the time the doctor signs the discharge order until final billing clearance and file handover. For cashless insurance claims, final approval from external TPAs may take additional time.
4. Understanding Your Discharge Summary
Your Discharge Summary is a vital medical document. Please review it carefully before leaving the hospital and ensure it contains:
- Confirmed Diagnosis and details of procedures performed.
- List of prescribed home medications with clear dosage instructions.
- Dietary guidelines, physical activity recommendations, and wound care instructions (if applicable).
- Date and time for your scheduled follow-up consultation with your doctor.
- Emergency warning signs (such as high fever, severe pain, unexpected bleeding, or shortness of breath) that require immediate return to the hospital.
5. Follow-Up Consultations
Timely follow-up is critical for complete recovery. You can book your post-discharge follow-up appointment with your consultant through our online portal or at the hospital reception during discharge.
